The popularity of engineering in India is not hidden from anybody. A large number of candidates sit in various entrance exams for admission into the B. Tech colleges. The main reason behind this widespread popularity of engineering is that there are a plethora of jobs available for engineering graduates in various industries such as IT, Electrical, Automation, Aviation, Construction, Mining, Steel, Chemical, and Pharmaceuticals, among others.
There are at least 40 engineering branches in total that are offered as an option in India; it varies at different universities. But, there are five branches of B. Tech that are the most popular and almost always remain in demand. Whether you see in the best B.Tech colleges in Maharashtra or any other sate in India, you would certainly find these branches on offer. They are: Computer Science, Mechanical and Automation, Electrical, Electronics and Communication, and Civil. So, let’s get acquainted with them.
Computer Science or CS
Computer Science is indisputably the most popular engineering branch in India. It deals with the construction and functioning of computers, both hardware and software included. The primary reason behind the widespread popularity of the CS branch is that IT is a booming sector in India which generates a lot of jobs for CS graduates. There are tech giants such as Google and Facebook that offer exorbitantly high pay packages to the deserving candidates.
Mechanical and Automation
Mechanical and Automation engineering focuses on the mechanics part of various machines and the functioning of automation systems. With the increasing use of automation in various industries, the demand for mechanical engineers is on a rise. The primary industries where the mechanical engineers find employment are steel, mining, construction, petroleum, and automobiles among others. The salary offered to them varies from one industry to the other, but it is quite decent.
Electrical
Electrical is also called the core engineering branch. It deals with sensors, circuits, microprocessors, semiconductors, motors, robotics, etc. There are both government and private jobs available in this line. The government jobs are mostly in NTPC, BHEL, Indian Railways, and DRDO. The private sector jobs are in companies such as Cisco, Intel, Sony, Philips, and Samsung. The salary packages offered to electrical engineers are also good.
Civil
Civil engineering is the oldest branch of engineering in India. Civil deals with the construction of roads, bridges, flyovers, tunnels, and other major infrastructure in the country. There came a time in between when the demand for civil decreased owing to less construction activity, but now as many new and big construction projects have been launched by the government, and many of them are proposed to be launched in the future, the demand for civil engineers has revived. The major recruiters of civil engineers include CPWD, DDA, and NHAI. In private sector also there are good opportunities in Larsen & Toubro, Tata Projects, IRCON, and Gammon India among others. The joining salary of civil engineers is not very high, but acceptable; they can expect to get a decent package after two to three years of experience.
Electronics and Communication or EC
EC is also a popular branch that deals with communication systems and signal technology. The EC engineers are primarily recruited by telecom companies such as Airtel, Vodafone, and Idea. In government sector, MTNL and BSNL are the major recruiters. The salaries in the electronics and communication branch are mediocre when compared to the other four branches discussed above.
The majority of B. Tech colleges in Mumbai, Delhi, Jaipur, and various other cities in India offer the above branches without fail due to their popularity and demand. The good news is that these branches are not going to loose their popularity anytime soon, and will continue to maintain their popular status in the future.
